ROBERT HYLAND
In 1955, Robert Hyland took the reins as general manager of KMOX — a role he held until his passing in 1992. He also served as Senior Regional VP of CBS Radio. Under his visionary leadership, KMOX became one of the first major radio stations in America to adopt an all-talk format, known as “At Your Service.” Hyland also built KMOX into “America’s Sports Voice,” securing play-by-play partnerships with the Cardinals, Blues, Football Cardinals, St. Louis Spirits, St. Louis Hawks, Mizzou, and St. Louis University.
Renowned for his relentless work ethic, Hyland arrived at the station by 2 a.m. six days a week. Though offered top CBS executive positions, he chose to remain in St. Louis — making KMOX, in the words of CBS founder William Paley, “the jewel in CBS’s crown.”
